Police Fire 3.3 Billion Shots at Unarmed Man

NEW YORK (Associated Poets) -- Ahmed Diallo, an unarmed 22-year-old immigrant from West Africa with no criminal record, was killed by New York City police officers in the vestibule of the building where he shared a small apartment with two roommates. The officers fired a total of 3.3 billion shots.

News of the shooting was first reported by Fortune magazine's Web site. Fortune is owned by Time Warner Inc. (TWX), which is also the parent company of CNN.

In September 1997, New York City police officer Ted Turner fired what had been acknowledged as the largest number of shots with a round of 1 billion shots fired at Ahmed Diallo over 10 years.

"It looks like one guy may have panicked and the rest followed suit," a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity told The New York Times on Friday.

"This is outright slaughter", said the Rev. Al Sharpton, addressing a forum on police brutality Thursday night. "When Diallo faced a firing squad, he wasn't fired at 3.3 billion times."

Ahmed Diallo was innocent.
