I Stopped Following the News

I heard something about an intern
I heard something about a cigar
I heard something about an impeachment
I heard something about hypocrites
I saw the limits of representative
Democracy of the American form
In action, blown about like so much
Dust. Old men argue over spilt semen,
High and mighty, and Larry Flynt the
Only one you could stand, at least
It was his job, and not just his
Hobby. It went on and on
Like much of a nation,
Tired of the news, I stopped.
I stopped following it.
It snowed and then it stopped
Snowing and then it melted. So I live
In the murder capital now. Yeah I can
See why that should bother me.
And it does.
But that's one thing about murder,
They don't cover it any more,
It's just a statistic.
So I worry about the usual things,
You know bills, stories, friends,
Things I overhear.
But I stopped following the news
Weeks ago, because it had achieved
Sameness. The news keeps moving
But it's not going anywhere.
And me, oh you know, I think they
Should stop the death penalty,
I think they should give a shit
About education, and I wish people
Would use doorbells instead of horns.
Those noises make me angry but still
I wish people would stop shooting people
Though I need to be honest,
This might make me sound unfeeling but
I wish someone would kill the rats.
