Quotations from The Cincinnati Enquirer, 8/13/99

"The source told the newspaper that Mr. Frankel [accused of "absconding with a huge cache of insurance company investments"], who remains at large, may have suffered from 'trader's block'--a psychological inability to complete a financial transaction."

"Japanese lawmakers on Thursday gave police the power to use wiretaps against crime suspects, defeating critics who fear it will lead to invasions of privacy. Opposition lawmakers in the upper house of Parliament tried to delay the vote in a marathon 21-hour session, at one point employing a 'cow walk' in which they shuffled excruciatingly slowly--or almost not at all--to place their ballots."

The Poem

I hoped to write
poems that might

show how these
two stories
could be linked:
so I thinked
and thought, frowned
all around,
huffed and puffed,
stiffed and stuffed,
typed a bunch,
missed my lunch,
stared at walls,
sat in stalls,
tried some hard
avant-garde--
when that failed,
my brain bailed,
so I'm left
pained, bereft,
reduced to
telling you:

look! 'trader's block'
rhymes with 'cow-walk'--
