Thoughts Concerning the Federal Death Penalty
Two executions -- two weeks,
After forty years reprieve.
Perhaps a chance happening?
Coincidence? Well -- maybe.
The Federal death penalty
Was reinstated twelve years ago
And appeals can take awhile.
There's been only one clemency
Within those twelve.
Still, these aren't the two
Sole criminals awaiting execution.
There are several more
Whose appeals are running down
And unlikely will receive
Mercy from our 'Resident.
Travelling through the courts
More cases appear headed
Towards the Five-Four Tribunal.
Perhaps the least reported:
Puerto Rico doesn't want its citizens
Subject to the Federal Guillotine
Since they don't get to vote.
Perhaps their best hope
Lies in choosing statehood
And assisting in electing
The 'Resident's replacement.
